We Got Canned

Today we moved the 40 foot shipping container full of dipoles and the UDUs (Utility Distribution Units, pronounced 'oodoo') off of the beach and onto the site. When the north face was installed one of its UDUs had a gravitational incident (it fell) and its entropy increased (it got messy inside). So everyone was a little nervous and a lot cautious today. Resolute Bay does not have the infrastructure to handle 40 foot containers, but it does have a lot if ingenuity and more than a few crazy people willing to try anything. In the end Narwhal lifted the UDU swith two forklifts, one on each side of the container, and then backed the truck under the UDUs, with minus 1/2" to spare (the truck kind of nudged the forklifts out of its way). Now when I say 'truck' I am not sure what you are picturing, but picture it a long time ago. The truck is old. Really, really old. So to get the UDUs to the site, they used a loader to give a little push going up the hill, and a little pull coming down the hill. On the pull down the hill with the first UDU the chain it was pulling with broke. Seriously, where else can you get paid to have this kind of fun?

Up goes the UDU. Note the width of the truck backing under the UDU.

Climbing the hill with a little encouragement.

Coming down the hill with a little support.

Also, would the person who tied my boots to the bench at lunch today (I am talking to you Luke and Brian) please report to the principals office? We have a cookie for you. Now if I could just get this stupid knot undone ...

My kind of management style (although I usually try to get my foot a bit lower).
